Episode 1

QIN SHAOYOU and HONG SI are wrestling on the street to earn money. SHAOYOU meets XIAOMEI at Mofa Monastery. He challenges XIAOMEI but XIAOMEI fails to answer his question. SHAOYOU therefore asks XIAOMEI to pass the question to DONGPO. DONGPO ponders over Madam YUE's matter and he finally finds a way to solve SHAOYOU's riddle. DONGPO discovers the workshop for making fake banknotes and he is captured. Madam HAN worries that he will tell the others and she wants DONGPO to collaborate with her. She also decides to release DONGPO after the wedding of HAN YUAN and RUNZHI. On the wedding day, RUNZHI fails to see DONGPO and she refuses to get married. Madam HAN finally brings DONGPO and XIAOMEI to the main hall. RUNZHI abducts HAN YUAN with her hairpin. When they arrive at the fork, SHAOYOU helps to abduct HAN YUAN and draws away the chasers.… ...

RUNZHI and Sis JIAO present DONGPO's favorite lamb pot at the same time. Everybody praises Sis JIAO for her outstanding cooking skills. The emperor reveals to DONGPO that the imperial chef is not as good as his home chefs. He wants DONGPO to send his chef to the palace so that she could train the imperial chef. DONGPO asks RUNZHI and Sis JIAO to have a contest. The loser needs to work as a chef in the palace for one month. On the contest day, RUNZHI discovers that the pork is rather sweet and she realizes that someone has replaced the salt with sugar. DONGPO finally announces that Sis JIAO has lost the contest. However, Sis JIAO doesn't want to go to the palace and she burns her hand at the stove. DONGPO invites the emperor and ANSHI to taste some new dishes at the restaurant. Everybody arrives to watch the emperor.… ...

In order to alienate SU MAI from RUNZHI, Sis JIAO tries to make SU MAI believe that RUNZHI is a bad woman. DONGPO goes to the park with RUNZHI and he meets ANSHI and his wife there. DONGPO invites the ladies to play word games and he discovers that RUNZHI is not good at it. He therefore asks SU MAI to teach RUNZHI. RUNZHI doesn't know couplet at all and SU MAI wants to punish her. Sis JIAO suggests RUNZHI to bring SU MAI to the market so that she will not be punished and they meet a strong slave on the street. DONGPO reports the case to the emperor and he suggests to stop the trading of slaves. ANSHI objects it for he thinks that this is a matter of the Liao Kingdom. SHAOYOU and HUNG SI discover that a storyteller is telling the story of DONGPO and Madam HAN. The storyteller is not mentioning SHAOYOU at all. HUNG SI cannot bear it and he argues with the storyteller.… ...

SHAOYOU and HUNG SI visit DONGPO. After learning about his situation, DONGPO wants to give him money and rice but SHAOYOU rejects him. RUNZHI doesn't want to manage the financial matters of the family and she wants to pass the job to DAMEI again and YUE'E supports the idea. The fan shop's owner suggests to sell the shop to DAMEI. DAMEI is interested and she wants to borrow money from DONGPO. During the time, Pork Vendor RONG suddenly returns money to them and DAMEI finds that the money is just enough for her to buy the fan shop. DAMEI's case is discovered and DONGPO scolds her. DAMEI promises to return the money in three days. DAMEI meets her ex-boyfriend JICHANG and JICHANG is willing to invest in her shop. DONGPO believes that SU MAI is playing tricks on RUNZHI and he scolds him. SU MAI complains that he is being wronged and he runs away from home. SU MAI is bullied by the street boys and SHAOYOU stops it on time.… ...

SHAOYOU brings RUNZHI and SU MAI to the lake. He tells them the story of "Lying Down on the Ice to Fetch Carp for his Stepmother". DONGPO and GAO GUI go to the fruit store opposite to DAMEI's fan shop to buy fruits. They try to hint to DAMEI that she should name the fan shop as "Tied Together Fans" and DAMEI accepts DONGPO's suggestion. DAMEI sends JICHANG a fan and YUE'E is very jealous. JICHANG tries to return the fan to DAMEI and DONGPO thinks that YUE'E is unreasonable. DONGPO doesn't want DAMEI to meet up with JICHANG again and RUNZHI quarrels with him. Sis JIAO is happy and she reveals to DONGPO that RUNZHI seems to have close relationship with SHAOYOU. XIAOMEI suddenly visits RUNZHI. She discovers that SHAOYOU and Sis JIAO are sitting on the bed. SHAOYOU stuns XIAOMEI immediately. Sis JIAO is scared and she decides to leave the house with SHAOYOU. She later runs away by boat without caring about SHAOYOU at all...

ANSHI's younger son WANG PANG and SU MAI try to show off in front of each other. SU MAI takes out a huge brush and claims that it is a gift from the emperor. The brush suddenly explodes and WANG PANG is injured. The doctor says that WANG PANG is out of his mind. A Taoist says that WANG PANG will recover if SU MAI drinks his charm water. Mrs WANG and the Taoist urge SU MAI to drink the charm water. RUNZHI tries to drink the charm water for SU MAI and she vomits immediately. DONGPO tries to torture SU MAI with a huge firecracker but RUNZHI decides to sacrifice for SU MAI... The emperor discusses a political matter with ANSHI and the other government officials. He asks DONGPO to carry out investigation on the matter. DONGPO asks SHAOYAO to inspect the sericulture at his hometown. XIAOMEI follows SHAOYAO by saying that she wants to monitor him. The silkworms have died mysteriously.… ...

YUE'E wants to invest in the fan shop and she forces DAMEI to sign a contract with her. DONGPO is satisfied with SHAOYAO's sericulture report and he asks him to manage the sericulture investigation of other states as well. YUE'E brings a Feng Shui Master to the fan shop for inspection. She tries to hang a huge fan there by saying that this could improve the business. JICHANG reveals to the shop assistant YUAN JI secretly that the huge fan will cause illnesses. ANSHI’s elder son WANG PANG visits the fan shop and DAMEI is invited to the Prime Minister’s Office to check out the fans. After learning the status of WANG PANG, YUE'E is jealous for DAMEI has a rich and powerful friend. DAMEI invites WANG PANG to meet up with DONGPO. WANG PANG reveals to DONGPO that he will join the imperial examination with his own efforts. DONGPO appreciates it and he agrees to marry DAMEI to him. The two families meet up with each other.… ...

YUE'E is upset that DONGPO keeps staying outside at night and she tries to speak for RUNZHI. YUE'E and JICHANG arrive at Su Mansion to taste the swellfish. However, WANLI and SANCHUAN try to invite DONGPO to farewell Doctor SHI together. RUNZHI is disappointed. The emperor discusses the political matters with ANSHI, DONGPO and the others. DONGPO suggests to the emperor that they could improve the financial status of women. The emperor asks DONGPO to give him a report. DONGPO is drunk when he returns. RUNZHI is angry that DONGPO did not keep his promise and he is still visiting Lumin Club regularly. SU MAI learns that RUNZHI has quarreled with DONGPO and he tries to mediate between them. YUE'E stays at the fan shop to monitor DAMEI. She tries to test DAMEI and JICHANG as well. DONGPO enters the palace and he meets the princess and YUE'E. YUE'E tries to provoke DONGPO.… ...

DONGPO tries to rescue JICHANG. He sneaks into the house but he is surrounded by the guards very soon. In the morning, the princess suddenly asks YUE'E to visit her. After meeting the princess, YUE'E realizes that she was cheated by DONGPO. XIAOMEI tries to wait for SHAOYAO at the pavilion. She discovers a carriage arriving and her elder brother SU ZHE and his wife SHI MI are returning to the capital. The imperial examination is coming. The emperor asks SU ZHE to return so that he could help to draft the questions for the examination. DONGPO presents the sericulture report but ANSHI suspects if the contents are accurate. DONGPO is speechless and he is willing to investigate the matter again. DONGPO is dissatisfied that SHAOYAO has changed the content of the report. He doesn't want SHAOYAO to date with XIAOMEI and he decides to fire him.… ...

The emperor suggests that the champion of a wrestling contest will become the Number One Scholar in the imperial examination and SHAOYAO wins. The emperor organizes a banquet and the government officials congratulate ANSHI for his elder son WANG PANG is engaged to the tycoon's daughter. DONGPO accuses ANSHI for not keeping his promise. The princess invites SHAOYAO to drink together and she declares her love to SHAOYAO. XIAOMEI suddenly bursts into the room and reveals that she is engaged to SHAOYAO already. The princess is very angry. YUE'E learns that DAMEI is not able to marry ANSHI's elder son WANG PANG and she worries that DAMEI will continue flirting with JICHANG. She therefore decides to have a baby with JICHANG. YUE'E keeps giving tonic to JICHANG and JICHANG suffers from nose bleeding whenever he sees a young lady. JICHANG meets YANHONG and he suffers from serious nose bleeding.… ...

YUE'E airs her grievances to DONGPO. DONGPO scolds YUE'E for controlling JICHANG all the time. JICHANG is being laughed by everybody and he is very embarrassed. DAMEI invites him to stay at Su Mansion temporarily. SHAOYAO is married to the SU's family. RUNZHI challenges him with three difficult questions of XIAOMEI, including word games, XIAOMEI's nickname and the location of XIAOMEI's hairpin. When everybody is looking for the hairpin, DAMEI discovers that JICHANG is drunk. JICHANG reveals that he feels regretful for leaving DAMEI before and DAMEI is deeply touched. When everybody is having fun on the wedding day, YUE'E suddenly arrives angrily. Everybody discovers that JICHANG is not dressing properly and DAMEI is hiding on the bed. RUNZHI suggests DAMEI to be the mistress. DONGPO and SU ZHE think that JICHANG should divorce YUE'E and marry DAMEI.… ...

The questions of the imperial examination are disclosed to outsiders and DONGPO investigates the case. He visits the Judiciary to collect confidential documents. When he leaves, he meets ANSHI and the others. XIAOMEI and CHUN HUA meet robbers on the street. Luckily, XU SHUMEI rescues them. SHUMEI is injured and she collapses. XIAOMEI brings her home. When SHUMEI wakes up, she loses her memory completely. There are thunder and lightning in the evening. SHUMEI asks XIAOMEI to stay with her. XIAOMEI shows her the hairpin for SHAOYAO. On the next day, DONGPO discovers that his father's beloved vast is broken. XIAOMEI discovers that her hairpin is missing. SHUMEI teaches XIAOMEI to find the hairpin with blood spirit. After investigation, DONGPO learns that Jagged Knife is suspicious of selling the examination papers. He and GAO GUI sneak into the Walled City Slum by disguising themselves.… ...

SHAOYAO returns home after relieving the people in stricken areas. SHUMEI collapses upon seeing SHAOYAO and she regains her memory when she wakes up. DONGPO presents SHAOYAO's divorce letter to SHUMEI but SHUMEI doesn't accept it. XIAOMEI suggests to find a solution together but she discovers that SHUMEI has left a message on the table. XIAOMEI worries that SHUMEI will commit suicide at the Wishing Tree. The emperor appoints ANSHI's elder son WANG PANG and the other scholars as the magistrates of various districts. SHAOYAO is appointed as the Director of Works but SHAOYAO wants to be the magistrate instead and he discusses it with DONGPO. DONGPO and his family members go to the hill to look for litsea. RUNZHI uses litsea to make pillows and DONGPO finally dreams of his deceased wife WANG FU. The emperor asks the government officials to view the blooming flowers and recite poems together.… ...

YUE'E encourages RUNZHI to run away from home until DONGPO apologizes to her. During the morning meeting, ANSHI proposes that this is the right time to recruit new soldiers but DONGPO objects the idea. They argue with each other and the emperor seek comment from SHAOYAO. DONGPO is surprised that SHAOYAO is supporting ANSHI. DAMEI urges DONGPO to bring RUNZHI back as soon as possible. She suggests him to prepare RUNZHI's favourite dish to please her. DAMEI falls asleep in the day and YUE'E scolds her. When DAMEI tries to answer back, she suddenly vomits and collapses. It is found that DAMEI is pregnant. The emperor wants to introduce the Green Shoots Law. DONGPO and ANSHI start a hot argument again. SHAOYAO makes a comment and the emperor asks all government officials to vote for it on the next day. RUNZHI makes honey wine and SHUMEI requests to bring one bottle to SHAOYAO and the government officials.… ...

DONGPO is missing and RUNZHI has escaped from the prison. ANSHI believes that they should remove DONGPO's official title and arrest him. The emperor knows that DONGPO doesn't know any martial arts and he asks SHAOYAO to investigate the case. Madam HON has rescued RUNZHI to Fu Zhuang and she wants RUNZHI to marry HON YUAN. RUNZHI rejects her and Madam HON threatens her that she will kill DONGPO. HON YUAN explains to RUNZHI why Madam HON wants her to marry him. He suggests that RUNZHI could ask DONGPO to sign the divorce agreement first so that Madam HON will be pleased. Once Madam HON is neglectful in taking precautions, HON YUAN promises RUNZHI that he will release her on the wedding night and bring her to a secret passage. He will also try his best to inform DONGPO to run away. In the middle of the night, SUSU arrives at the dungeon to give DONGPO the key. DONGPO runs away to the park but he is being surrounded by guards.… ...

SHUMEI meets her parents XU CHENG and Ms WU on the street. She immediately sends them to the inn with excuse. XU CHENG has become insane after the flood disaster in his hometown. Ms WU scolds SHUMEI for indirectly forcing SHAOYAO to sign the divorce agreement. DAMEI has got menstrual blood and she worries about her baby. The doctor says that DAMEI is not pregnant at all. They are shocked and they don't know how to tell YUE'E. DONGPO's brother-in-law CHENG ZICAI suddenly visits him and asks him to keep his wife's spirit tablet. SU ZHE and SHI MI go to the countryside together. When they return, SHI MI takes out the leaves he marked earlier at different places and he tries to draw a map based on the marks. SU ZHE calls for a sharing meeting and he is captured by the soldiers suddenly. DONGPO asks the workers to unclog the circulation channel at the construction site. ZICAI arrives and invites DONGPO to meet up at Waterside Cottage.… ...

The emperor presents the new invention "magic fire balls" to all government officials but it doesn't operate successfully. SHAOYAO helps the emperor to find an excuse for the failure. The emperor promotes SHAOYAO and asks him to monitor the Green Shoots Law. Boss SHI has ordered a large quantity of fans from DAMEI but he suddenly disappears and his order is cancelled. YUE'E suggests to sell the shop to compensate for the loss. YUE'E becomes the owner of the shop and DAMEI has got nothing. YUE'E discovers that DAMEI is not pregnant at all and she asks JICHANG to divorce her. JICHANG refuses to do so and he leaves with DAMEI. DONGPO visits Waterside Cottage and he discovers that the emperor has disguised himself as a boy attendant from school. The emperor asks DONGPO to bring him to QIN CAO and he is mesmerized by her beauty. JICHANG tries to earn a living by practicing divination at the temple and someone arrives to rob him.… ...

YUE'E is very angry to learn that DAMEI and JICHANG are helping out at RUNZHI's restaurant. The emperor tries to learn wrestling from SHAOYAO. ANSHI has proposed to build a beacon. The emperor thinks that it is not urgent and he decides to make fireworks instead. RUNZHI invites everybody at Su Mansion to Spring Wine Restaurant. DONGPO arrives with QIN CAO. During the banquet, SU ZHE comments that ANSHI is self-willed and the emperor only repeats what others say. The emperor learns about it from his supporters. He punishes SU ZHE and sends him to a faraway location. SU ZHE is demoted and SHI MI finds it strange. SHUMEI suspects QIN CAO for she is the only outsider in the banquet. DONGPO tries to speak for QIN CAO and RUNZHI is upset. XU CHENG leaves his jade pendant after eating at Spring Wine Restaurant. SHUMEI discovers that the jade pendant is missing and she wants to report it to the government official.… ...

The emperor visits QIN CAO at Su Mansion in the evening. He wants to appoint her as his concubine and he asks her to wait for his good news. People are saying that some peasants have sold their children reluctantly because of Green Shoots Law. The upright government official ZHENG XIA draws people's hardships on "Drifters". He is being captured by the corrupting government officials and they send him to ANSHI. ANSHI discovers that the drawing is a counterfeit and he wants to find the original one. After discussing the political matters, LI TIAN says that his foster daughter wants to marry the emperor. ANSHI says that his foster daughter is QIN CAO and he thinks that her identity is suspicious. DING DONG's daughter DING DING tries to find the whereabouts of her father and the head of prison, HONG SI, discovers her. A masked man tries to break into the prison and DING DONG seizes the chance to run away.… ...

The emperor dismisses ANSHI and many government officials try to take leave for a month. ANSHI goes for a trip and he plays chess with an old man. He is sick afterwards and his wife asks Dr LI to treat him. Dr LI discovers that ANSHI's pulse is abnormal. There is an outbreak of epidemic disease at Silk Village and the emperor asks SHAOYOU to investigate it at Silk Village with two imperial doctors. XIAOMEI discovers that SHAOYOU has forgotten to take his gloves and she asks HONG SI to go to Silk Village with her. SHAOYOU arrives at Silk Village and he discovers that Dr LI is the origin of the disease. Dr MA tries to feel ANSHI's pulse and he discovers that ANSI's symptoms are similar to Dr LI. SHAOYOU realizes that this is an infectious disease and he tries to quarantine all the patients at the relay station. When XIAOMEI arrives, her finger is wounded by a female patient. SHAOYAO helps to dress her wound immediately.… ...

XIAOMEI is infected. She gets mad and attacks SHAOYAO. Some patients want to escape. SHAOYAO tries to stop them and he is wounded by them as well. WANLI arrives at the village entrance with soldiers to monitor the situation and they are prepared to burn the whole village. DONGPO arrives to stop WANLI and they start a quarrel. The incident is over and DONGPO comments that SHAOYAO has done a great job. The emperor resumes SHAOYAO's post. The Taoist helps SHUMEI to practice black magic. He says that the victim will definitely die if SHUMEI stabs the grass puppet with needle and lets this person drink the charm water. SHUMEI put XIAOMEI's name inside the grass puppet and she gives it to Ms WU. SHAOYAO returns home to discover that XIAOMEI has farted and the room is very smelly. SHUMEI believes that the charm water is working. Ms WU meets GAO XING and GAO GUI on the street when they are in casual wear.… ...

RUNZHI is requested to visit the harem since the emperor's mother wants to know more about QIN CAO. The emperor wants QIN CAO to please his mother by offering vegetarian dish to her. DONGPO suggests RUNZHI to cook for her. DONGPO doesn't understand why RUNZHI tries to prevent QIN CAO from meeting up with the emperor's mother. RUNZHI replies that QIN CAO is fond of DONGPO. QIN CAO sends a drawing to DONGPO before she leaves. DONGPO discovers that the drawing was from his father SU XUN and he accepts the gift. SHUMEI tries to take revenge on RUNZHI. ZICAI tries to rescue her and he is injured. DONGPO and ZICAI go to drink at the restaurant and they meet a middle-aged woman. The woman scolds DONGPO for snatching her son. DONGPO follows ZICAI and he discovers that ZICAI is arguing with the woman. ZICAI says that Madam JIA was having a secret affair with SU XUN. DONGPO tries to find SU XUN's writings in the study room.… ...

The soldiers send JICHANG and the others home. The emperor urges DONGPO to meet up with him immediately. When YUE'E worships the god, she meets JICHANG there. When she tries to humiliate him, she is sick suddenly and her mouth is twisted. YUE'E visits the doctor but it doesn't work and she tries to seek help from another skillful doctor. HONG SI and the guards go to the brothel and they are shocked to discover that SHUMEI is working as a prostitute there. XIAOMEI disguises herself as a man to visit SHUMEI at the brothel. SHUMEI tries to announce XIAOMEI and her identity deliberately. SHUMEI tries to serve the guests by saying that she is the ex-wife of the Number One Scholar. The soldiers capture her and send her to the court. DONGPO arrives at the court as a witness and they send SHUMEI to her hometown. DONGPO and RUNZHI try to collect litsea together. Some people attack RUNZHI and kidnap her.… ...

RUNZHI visits JICHANG at Spring Wine Restaurant to inform him that YUE'E is sick. JICHANG visits YUE'E at the temple for he wants to take care of her but YUE'E rejects him. YUE'E visits RUNZHI at Su Mansion and RUNZHI asks her to stay there at night. GAO GUI tidies up the garden in the morning and he is shocked to discover a dead body in the well. JICHANG and DAMEI go to the temple together. They urge YUE'E to return home but YUE'E rejects them and she helps to DAMEI to let go of the problem in her heart. DONGPO, SHAOYAO and HONG SI go to drink at the pub. He has got inspiration suddenly and he writes a poem. When they return, SHAOYAO is overjoyed to learn that XIAOMEI is pregnant. The storyteller tries to tell the story of DONGPO and QIN CAO with DONGPO's new poem and the emperor is very angry about it. DONGPO is very tired and he resigns to the emperor but the emperor rejects him. DONGPO, SHAOYAO and HONG SI go to drink at the pub again. DONGPO has got inspiration suddenly and he writes a poem with four sentences on the table. DONGPO returns to the Chancellor Temple to worship the god. The old monk gives advice to him and DONGPO is enlightened. When DONGPO leaves the temple, many soldiers suddenly arrive to arrest him. The emperor visits DONGPO at the prison.… ...

With the help of HONG SI, DONGPO meets up with SU MAI and XIAOMEI. DONGPO asks SHAOYAO to take care of all family members. SHAOYAO repents to RUNZHI that he has wrote the last two sentences of the rebellious poem. SHAOYAO surrenders himself to the emperor. The emperor reveals that he has knew it already and RUNZHI is the one who told him everything about the poem. RUNZHI believes that DONGPO is in love with QIN CAO and he is not loyal to both the emperor and herself. She thinks that DONGPO should be killed so that she could eat his meat. DONGPO is sentenced to death by boiling his body. RUNZHI visits him at the prison and DONGPO suggests to divorce her so that she could marry another man.
