In 1919, the pro-independence Sinn Féin party wins and an independent parliament, the Dáil Éireann, is created. As the number of IRA militants grows, violence escalates throughout the country.
In the late twenties, Ireland is in the midst of war. Towns and villages have been devastated, house raids strike fear into the population and hundreds of Republicans have been arrested. Despite having tens of thousands of troops on the ground, much of the countryside becomes ungovernable for the British as rebels step up armed attacks.
