The story of Kin, an orphaned boy who grew up in the secluded village of Serpa deep in the forest. He searches for his true parents while working as a guide for Kyoko, a Japanese woman who is also searching for her missing father. Along the way, Kin meets Piangmat, a determined journalist and friend of Kyoko, as well as Phupha, a justice-loving forest dweller who secretly fights against illegal arms dealers with the villagers. They all become entangled in the pursuit of a lost treasure of gold from World War II and must evade Ronin, a giant snake guarding the immense fortune.

At the end of the failed robbery, all are isolated, injured or prisoners. The cops are on their trail and already, in the neighborhood, young people are trying to take the place they left. Outside, the world of organized crime seems far too wild for them. Will they be able to come together again and free Inès from the clutches of the dangerous Colonel Sekhou? Caught in the storm they themselves unleashed, can they save their skins?

The story takes place during the weeks before Christmas, in the small mining town of fictitious Granhyttan in Bergslagen, Sweden. One day a suspicious couple, Signe and Orvar, arrives in the small town and retires in an abandoned hut. Nobody knows what they up to; but strange things starts to happen as Staffan finds a gold nugget while playing in a disused mine at the Kråkberget Mountain during a skiing trip with his schoolmates. Staffan believes the nugget is a part of Skarp-Erik's gold, as his grandpa had told exciting stories about. The news about the gold discovery spread quickly and Staffan and his friends are soon pursued by curious schoolmates, school staff and also the mysterious strangers. All this happens as the students are rehearsing for the nativity play before Christmas break.
