THE OPENER is a feel-good, underdog music doc about a street performer who wrote 30 songs in 30 days to process his grief and isolation during the pandemic, and found that his music spoke to millions. When it reached the ears of one of his heroes, Grammy-winner Jason Mraz, he was invited on his very first tour and given a chance to prove himself on the big stage.

Recorded during a series of concerts at The Hague in early May 1991, this show is from 10 May and served as a benefit gig for Kurd Aid. It isn't a full length performance of course, but still remains interesting. Several of the performances were released as live b-sides on 'Ten Summoner's Tales' era singles. Perhaps of most interest is the live version of Hendrix's 'Purple Haze', a rip-roaring crowd favourite from that tour.

The filming is quite good and the BD features PCM stereo and 5.1 mixes as audio choices. Expect all the usual live show theatrics (including the guillotine) and great showmanship not only from Cooper himself, but the rest of the band. You would expect an artist at this stage of his career to be on the decline, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Of course, the “band” is a joy to watch as well, especially Glen Sobel (drums) and Nita Strauss (guitar) – two virtuosos on their respective instruments. They add so many subtle intricacies into the music without overstepping Cooper’s vocals. But when the time is theirs in the spotlight, they shred/jam with authority and conviction – absolute professionalism at the highest level in rock music.

This spectacular live concert sees Toto celebrating their 35th Anniversary at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland during their 2013 World Tour. The show epitomises the combination of craft, heart and drive that has been Toto s trademark throughout their career in a set packed with hits and classic album tracks. Minor Threat played one of its last shows at Washington DC's 930 Club in June of 1983; they would only play once more in DC. Two years later, the tapes from the 930 show were edited together and Dischord Records released them as the Minor Threat Live VHS video in 1986. Along with the 40 minute 930 performance, the DVD includes a 1982 Minor Threat show in Camden, NJ, a clip of Minor Threat's 2nd ever show at DC Space in December 1980, and excerpts from a 1983 interview with vocalist, Ian MacKaye.
