The story takes place in Prague in the 1930s. An old trickster watchmaker named Sakař fakes an illness to get into the hospital. The prosecutor has no direct evidence and must rely only on his oratory skills to propose the maximum sentence. In his desperate attempt to win the trial, he grabs at every straw.
