In the early hours of the morning on the campus of an American college, Martha, much to her husband George’s displeasure, has invited the new professor and his wife to their home for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.

The enterprising Anton Klapproth runs a flying duck farm in the Eifel, but now he finally wants to experience a real adventure in the big city of Cologne. A visit to a sanatorium for the mentally ill seems particularly sensational to him, as there is certainly a lot going on there with the "Jecken" and would provide plenty of story material for his regulars' table. In return for a loan, Anton's nephew allows his uncle to stay at the Pension Schöller. However, the guests there are by no means mentally ill, just rather eccentric. However, the unsuspecting Anton has a great time, thinking he is in a psychiatric institution.

A professional card player and swindler, Icharev, arrives in a small town with a plan to rip off some local jackdaw if possible. However, a trio of local, experienced swindlers have the same plan. They want to play cards with Icharev, but they immediately recognize each other's personalities. The fun continues, but the group regrets that they have no one to play with. There is a local landowner, Glov, but he avoids cards like the devil. And yet he is waiting for two hundred thousand rubles from the bank for the sold piece of land. Pavel Pavlovich Goryaev is not that young of an actor. For many years he plays in the provincial theater in leading roles. The director of a play based on a play that was written for Goryaev takes the young actor for his role. Goryaev at first falls into despair, leaves the theater, turns to friends. After a while he digests what happened and realizes that it is time to leave the stage with dignity.
