Juan Méndez Bernal leaves his house on the 9th of april of 1936 to fight in the imminent Spanish Civil War. 83 years later, his body is still one of the Grass Dwellers. The only thing that he leaves from those years on the front is a collection of 28 letters in his own writing.

In 2008 French filmmaker Julie Gali traveled to the US to film the election of Barack Obama. In spite of this victory for civil rights, it soon became apparent that the rights of another minority were under threat. In California the passing of Proposition 8 marked the only time in U.S. history that a civil right was actually taken away after it had been granted. David Riondino, an Italian film director, is coming to Spain to document the Atocha massacre of 1977, to make a film on its 50th anniversary. He will be helped by Alejandra, a young documentary filmmaker who urges him to contextualise the past with the current rise of the far right. By investigating the Atocha attack, David will recover a part of that recent past and at the same time will witness a reality that encourages reflection on some burning issues such as the advance of the far right, problems of access to housing and job insecurity.

Annita Malavasi was just 22 when the Germans occupied Italy, their former allies, in 1943. As a partisan in the Italian resistance named “Laila”, she moved throughout the Apennines with and between fighting units, delivering information, transporting weapons, and taking part in battles. By the end of the war, Laila had risen among the ranks to become one of the few female commanders in the Italian resistance.
