This is a two-episode video series, each episode lasting approximately 80 minutes. This video series, together with the video series "Unknown War 2: The Man with Two Faces," is a remake of the older television series "The Unknown War (1971)." Two video series were released due to the long total duration. The original music by Danae Evangelou from the opening credits of the 1971 television series is the same music heard in the opening credits of the video series. These two video series were broadcast as a television series by ANT1 under the title "The Unknown War (1990)" when the station began operating, and it was the first Greek television series broadcast by the station. That television series was rerun in 1995 by New Channel.

D-Day marks the starting point for the liberation of Western Europe from the grip of the Nazi yoke. On June 6th, 1944, Allied soldiers attack German positions at no less than five sectors of the beach in Normandy. The assault takes place from the sea and is considered the largest amphibious landing operation in history. This event now sees its 80th anniversary. But so close, so authentic, this battle has never been shown before. American and British cameramen are at the scene in landing boats, under fire at the beaches, and during the rescue of wounded soldiers. Their original footage, shot in black-and-white, was extensively restored and colourized for this documentary. The historically unique footage appears in motion picture quality. The war gets colour. And thereby a different impact. We look directly in the faces of those, Americans, Canadians, Britons, and Germans, who are often not older than 20. A wealthy heiress hires mercenaries to track down the freedom fighter kidnappers who killed her husband.

The film starts by a visit to bucolic Normandy before the events. This peaceful atmosphere is shattered by Operation Overlord, minutely described in the second part of the documentary. The landing on D-Day and the ensuing battles and bombings martyr the peaceful area giving the earth thousands of body instead of seeds. In the last part, the dreadful aftermath of the steel storm is shown both with sympathy for the victims and hope for the future, since all these sacrifices, whether military or civilians, have not been in vain.
